Captive Desert Tortoise Habitat Project
Project type
Landscape Design
Date
November 2022
Location
California
This conceptual backyard habitat was requested by the Captive Desert Tortoise Habitat Project to help those interested in adopting a desert tortoise pass the yard-check adoption requirement. The backyard design is intended to be a one-size-fits-all plan for construction in any individual's backyard, regardless of residence size or yard orientation. There is a planting scheme, burrow and green roof construction details, and perimeter fence details for those who want to DIY their backyard. There is a human-common
area, the deck and garden, to retain territorial boundaries for the well-being of the tortoise.
There are three desert tortoise species, all protected. It is against the law to buy, sell, or take a desert tortoise from the wild. There are only 4 entities in the United States that can legally adopt them to the public. You can learn more here: https://bit.ly/3in8R0K
